Draft EIR has been released

Public comment period is 60 days, ending November 4, 2010.

California State Parks, TRPA, and The Bureau of Reclamation have jointly released a draft environmental impact report for the "Upper Truckee River Restoration and Golf Course Reconfiguration Project". Although no preferred alternative is mentioned, it is clear that Alternative Two is favored. Alternative Two will restore the river AND move 9 holes of the Lake Tahoe Golf Course into Washoe Meadows State Park. This alternative will fragment the park, destroy wildlife habitats and nearly double the amount of golf course fairways bordering the river. If you value open space and want to see it preserved for future generations speak out now!

Some ideas for letter writing:

1. ItŐs wrong to move a golf course onto environmentally sensitive land within a state park.

2. Alternative 2 will fragment the park and ruin wildlife habitat.

3. Alternative 2 will nearly double the number of golf course fairways bordering the river.

4. Alternative 2 will transform present habitat for diverse wildlife into a mono-culture.

5. Golfing is in decline.

6. In it's present state, Washoe Meadows State Park provides year-round, low-impact, affordable recreation.

7. Restore the river AND save the park from golf course development.

More ideas and information will be forthcoming as the EIR is reviewed.
